Powering Up for Net Zero: Labour's Vision for a Sustainable UK

Now that the country has voted, and Sir Kier Starmer’s Labour government is in power, we can expect to see some changes taking place to the political landscape in the UK. To meet the UK’s legal obligation to be net zero by 2050, Labour will need to make some big decisions to help progress and meet our decarbonisation goals.

The Environment was one of the featured topics in the Kings Speech with promises on a:

  1. Great British Energy Bill - a publicly owned clean energy company to help accelerate investment in renewable energy.

  2. Sustainable Aviation Fuel Bill – to support sustainable aviation fuel production.

  3. New Water Bill – improve water quality and strengthen the powers of the water regulator

The Speech ‘recognised the urgency of the global climate challenge and the new job opportunities that can come from leading the development of the technologies of the future’

The Secretary of State for Energy, Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, has declared that the ‘Government will unleash a solar rooftop revolution’. Below are some other the key announcements made over the last few weeks:

🌍 The de facto onshore wind ban lifted
🌍 A new Ministerial team at Department for Energy Security and Net Zero established
🌍 The launch of a new Mission Control centre with Chris Stark
🌍 A National Wealth Fund TaskForce announced

We hope that these various commitments and investments will give UK businesses the confidence to further invest in their own sustainability agendas. Delivering comprehensive ESG strategies is crucial for organisations to reduce emissions and become net zero.
